Who? Caroline (16) & other members of Frontier Girls Troop 109
What? New Baby Gift Bags
Where? Hawkins, TX
Why? To support Open Door Resource Center which provides evidence-based information, cost-free services, and practical support to women and families experiencing an unexpected or unsupported pregnancy.
What inspired you to start this project? | Because I wanted to help mothers and babies, for my Frontier Girls Eagle Level “Make A Difference Award,* I wanted to make New Baby Gift Bags containing two handmade brushed cotton receiving blankets, a handmade baby hat, and information on breastfeeding for the new mother. * The Make A Difference Award is a community service project organized and led by a student |
While working on your project, what surprised you? | When ordering lots of fabric online, you might not get square yards. I ordered 25 yards and it came in 8.5 yd bolts! So I had to order some extra because I needed whole yards to make blankets that were 1 yard square. |
What do you feel you learned from this experience? | How to use a serger machine. How to search for and order products online How much people appreciate handmade items |
How did Karma for Cara impact your project? | Without your help, this project would not have happened as we could not afford the money for fabric. You provided the money for the 50+ yards of flannel that I needed!! |
How will your project continue to impact others? | The resource center has a parental education program, and as the mothers complete the stages of the program they are given baby items, which would include my baby bags. |
