In order to qualify for a K4C award, an applicant must be 18 years of age or younger, and the project must take place in the US.

Who? Amelia (17 years old)

What? Crafting for a Cause

Where? Dublin OH

Why? To support the Ohio Wildlife Center which rehabilitates wild animals and fulfill the CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) requirement for the high school’s International Baccalaureate program

The Q&A

What inspired you to start this project? My friend started this project a year and a half ago to support the Ohio Wildlife Center. I have taken over this and continued to grow this project. We love animals and want to support our local wildlife.
While working on your project, what surprised you?How many people are interested in helping. When I took over, there were only three people involved. Now, there are over 15 people involved. If you give someone something specific to do, 9 out of 10 times they will complete what they committed to.
What do you feel you learned from this experience?I learned how to be a better leader. I’m not naturally an outgoing person, but to make sales and find more people to get involved, I had to break out of my shell.
How did Karma for Cara impact your project?Karma for Cara has helped this project flourish. Last school year, all the money for supplies came out of our proceeds. Now, we have a bank of funds. We are able to provide more money for the wildlife center. We are able to help more animals this way. We have also been able to make larger investments from this grant. Taking a risk and buying supplies in bulk is less scary now. Prior to Karma for Cara, we made significantly less money since our supplies were more expensive.
How will your project continue to impact others?I am currently trying to find a replacement president. I am a high school senior so I will not be able to continue this project next year. Since I have been expanding this group all year, there are many people willing to continue this project next year.
