Karma for Cara Foundation microgrant recipients have competed in an application process alongside other young people who have spearheaded exceptional service projects that benefit their communities. In order to qualify for a K4C award, an applicant must be 18 years of age or younger, and the project must take place in the US.
Karma for Cara microgrant recipient Parker (14 from CT) used his award to launch a blessing bags initiative to serve the homeless population in his community. As a member of the foster care community, Parker is deeply motivated to give back. He understands the challenges faced by vulnerable populations and wants to help people feel less isolated through distributing blessing bags that can provide practical support & emotional comfort to those who are struggling. Parker plans to expand the initiative by involving other youth, particularly through his membership in the Junior Elks Club (Antlers). He wants to create opportunities for more young people to engage in community service. Parker has already applied for an additional K4C microgrant!
| What inspired you to start this project? | I saw an article on my church’s Facebook page requesting supplies for the homeless as they were really low in basic essentials. |
| While working on your project, what surprised you? | How much fun it would be and how rewarding it was to do this project as well as with my siblings. |
| What do you feel you learned from this experience? | The supplies were very well received and very appreciated. It made me want to do more for my surrounding communities. |
| How did Karma for Cara impact your project? | It provided the funds and support I needed to make this project happen. These funds helped so many people obtain basic necessities. |
| How will your project continue to impact others? | 25 toothbrush kits and extra supplies were delivered along with 125 blessing bags that the homeless and low-income seniors in Waterbury and Wolcott, CT can use. It inspired my siblings to want to help out and start their own projects. My sister is currently hosting a homeless drive of her own for clothing and toiletries. |
