Karma for Cara Foundation microgrant recipients have competed in an application process alongside other young people who have spearheaded exceptional service projects that benefit their communities. In order to qualify for a K4C award, an applicant must be 18 years of age or younger, and the project must take place in the US.
With her K4C award, Heidy & members of the Carolina High School Beta Club collaborated with Greenville’s Gift, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing essential baby items to newborns in need in the Greenville, South Carolina area. Calling their project Love Bug Blankies, Heidy & team created baby blankets made from felt material by tying together two pieces of felt, ensuring a cozy and comforting gift for the babies.
| What inspired you to start this project? | Many families in our community are experiencing challenges, especially those who are welcoming new babies. The arrival of a child should be a joyful time, yet for some parents, financial hardships and limited resources can make it overwhelming. Providing support during this stage not only meets an immediate need but also shows families that their community cares about them. One simple yet meaningful way to give back is through handmade or donated blankets. A blanket offers more than warmth—it represents comfort, security, and kindness. For a new parent, receiving such a gift can ease the burden of preparing for their child and provide reassurance that they are not alone. For the baby, it offers a sense of safety and nurturing in their earliest days. Acts of giving, like providing blankets, ripple outward. They strengthen community bonds, encourage compassion, and remind us that even small gestures can make a lasting difference. Supporting families in need through this kind of outreach not only helps meet practical needs but also fosters hope and dignity. In offering blankets, we extend love, care, and encouragement to those beginning a new chapter in life. |
| While working on your project, what surprised you? | What surprised us most while working on the project was just how much time it actually took to complete a blanket. At first, we assumed the process would be fairly quick and straightforward, but we soon realized that creating each blanket required patience, attention to detail, and steady effort. Some people found the steps challenging at times, whether it was tying knots consistently or keeping the fabric aligned, which reminded us that what seems simple at first glance often requires more skill and persistence than expected. Another surprise was the amount of physical space the blankets occupied once completed. They quickly filled tables, bins, and even entire sections of the room, which made us think about the scale of our project in a new way. It was rewarding to see the progress visually, but it also challenged us to find creative ways to organize and store the growing pile. We also hadn’t anticipated the supply challenges. At times, local stores were completely sold out of the blanket kits we needed, forcing us to plan ahead and adjust our timeline. This taught us the importance of flexibility, resourcefulness, and teamwork when unexpected obstacles arise. Overall, these surprises made the experience more meaningful. They highlighted the effort that goes into even the simplest acts of service, reminded us to appreciate persistence, and helped us grow in problem-solving and collaboration. |
| What do you feel you learned from this experience? | Through this project, we learned valuable lessons that went far beyond simply making blankets. One of the biggest takeaways was the importance of patience and persistence. At first, we thought the task would be simple, but we quickly discovered that completing a blanket required focus, time, and consistent effort. This taught us that even small acts of service often require more work than expected, but that effort makes the outcome more meaningful. We also learned the value of teamwork and supporting one another. Some people found certain steps more challenging, but by encouraging and helping each other, we were able to stay motivated and keep the project moving forward. It reminded us that working together not only makes tasks easier but also makes the experience more enjoyable and rewarding. Another lesson was the importance of flexibility and problem-solving. We faced challenges such as limited space for storing the finished blankets and even shortages of blanket kits at stores. These situations forced us to adapt, think creatively, and plan ahead—skills that are important in any project or real-world situation. Most importantly, we learned that our efforts, no matter how small they may seem, can have a big impact on others. Each blanket represented comfort and care for someone in need, and realizing this made all of our time and energy worthwhile. The experience showed us that service is not just about the final product, but also about the growth, teamwork, and compassion that happen along the way. |
| How did Karma for Cara impact your project? | The grant from Karma for Cara had a significant impact on our project and on us personally. Without the funding, it would have been difficult to purchase enough blanket kits to make a meaningful difference. The grant provided the resources we needed to not only get started but also to sustain the project when supplies ran low or when stores were sold out. Knowing we had that financial support gave us confidence and allowed us to focus on the work rather than worrying about costs. Beyond the practical benefits, the grant also made us feel supported and encouraged. It showed us that others believed in our idea and were willing to invest in our efforts to help the community. That trust motivated us to work harder and take greater pride in what we were doing. It also gave us a deeper sense of responsibility we wanted to make sure that the funds were used wisely and that the final outcome truly honored the purpose of the grant. On a personal level, receiving the grant taught us about the importance of gratitude and accountability. We learned how impactful outside support can be in making service projects possible, and it inspired us to think about ways we can give back in the future. Overall, the Karma Care grant didn’t just provide financial help it strengthened our project, reinforced the value of service, and reminded us of the power of generosity and community support. |
| How will your project impact others? | Our project will continue to impact others by extending kindness and comfort beyond the initial round of blankets. Each finished blanket represents care and support for someone in need, and the recipients will continue to feel that warmth whenever they use it. Knowing that a handmade blanket was created just for them can provide encouragement during difficult times and a reminder that they are not alone. Although we accomplished a lot last school year, we didn’t have enough time to use all of the grant funds before the year ended. This means we now have an exciting opportunity to keep the project going into the current school year. With the remaining funds, we plan to purchase more blanket kits and continue making blankets, allowing us to expand the impact to even more people in our community. The continuation of the project also gives us the chance to involve new students and volunteers, spreading the experience of teamwork, problem-solving, and service to others. In this way, the project not only brings comfort to recipients but also inspires those who participate to recognize the value of giving back. By carrying the project forward into this school year, we hope to create a lasting ripple effect—providing both physical comfort through the blankets and a model of compassion and community service that will encourage others to get involved. |
