Q&A with Microgrant Recipient Keontae

Karma for Cara Microgrants help fund exceptional projects led by youth 18 and under to help complete service projects in their communities. Read about our micro grant recipient Keontae, a 16 year old who started Because We Care. Because We Care provides personal hygiene kits to children taken into custody through the child welfare system in his community.

1. How did you become involved with Because We Care?
I started Because We Care, because I know how hurt I was when I was placed in foster care and didn’t have any of my clothes, toys or video games. I remember wondering what happened to all of my stuff. Everytime we were moved, it seemed like I lost more and more and that’s a bad feeling.
2. Why is your work important to you?
Because We Care is important because I don’t want other children to feel sad about not having their own things.
3. How did the money from the microgrant help with your project?
The money from the micro grant was used as the seed money to start Because We Care. Because of the grant we were able to buy back packs and all the supplies to fill the bags.
4. What message of giving back do you have for others?
It feels so good to give to others. I have a better understanding of what the Bible says when it tells us  “it is better to give than to receive”. When we have our big day putting everything together and giving them out I will be so happy.
