Press Release: Redwood Logistics Partners with Walgreens to Make Kits of Essentials for the Lincoln Park Community Shelter

CHICAGO, IL. December 18, 2015 – Redwood Logistics (‘Redwood’), a strategically-integrated logistics provider, has partnered with Walgreens, a Redwood Multimodal customer, to organize a drive to collect and donate kits containing personal essentials to the Lincoln Park Community Shelter (‘LPCS’). The LPCS works to help out the homeless around Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood.

Maysem Alsaidi, a Redwood employee, began the effort back in mid-November by contacting LPCS about donating clothing. The shelter had more of a need for food, as Thanksgiving was near, so she held an office drive that collected nearly $300 which was used to purchase over two full carts of groceries for donation.

That initiative sparked an idea for a second wave of giving. Andrew Friedman, co-founder and Executive Vice President of Redwood, had recently read an article in Crain’s Chicago about Eric Becker, and the foundation Karma for Cara (‘K4C’), which began when his daughter Cara was diagnosed and then passed away from leukemia. The K4C website mentions that Cara was known for her compassion and belief in volunteerism. The foundation site has a section listing ways to give back in your local community.

Friedman saw the idea of putting together kits containing toiletry items to donate to a homeless shelter, and he and Alsaidi agreed that this initiative was the next step in helping the LPCS. “Even though we never met Cara, her legacy touched us,” said Friedman. “It inspired us; we wanted to give back.” Employees donated money to purchase the items, and some also volunteered to help assemble the kits before bringing them to the shelter. All proceeds raised by employees were matched by Redwood in order to make the most impact.

Walgreens, a top customer of Redwood Multimodal, partnered with Redwood to gather toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors, deodorant, and other essential items. Walgreens generously offered to not only give Redwood a discount for supplies purchased, but also to send volunteers to help with assembling the kits.    “We are committed to the health and happiness of the communities we serve,” said John Gremer, Walgreens Director of Community Affairs. “With the help of our team members, Walgreens and Redwood were able to assemble and deliver much-needed personal care kits to the shelter for those in need.”

Redwood and its employees raised over $10,000 and had over 20 volunteers putting together the 350+ kits.

What Lincoln Park Community Shelter had to say:

I am sitting here still in shock eight hours after I walked into the shelter today by the generosity shown by Redwood Logistics. It is so incredible to see all the kits you assembled and they will help us for such a long time. Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you. The Guests have been so excited as we’ve been handing them out and it’s just been awesome all around.” –Volunteer Program Manager, Lincoln Park Community Shelter
