“Teen Voluntourism”

At K4C we educate and promote the importance and the necessity to give back in your local community as there is a great need and many accessible opportunities to volunteer. However, we must not forget about global service and the benefits that accompany traveling to a foreign country, operating outside of your comfort zone and helping others in need. Chryss Cada from recently wrote an article about teenagers spending a few weeks out of their summer to travel to a foreign country and volunteer, “[The students] are challenged in ways they haven’t been before. They find themselves in different cultural scenarios; they deal with anxiety that brings and overcome it- and that builds a lot of character”. The benefits of traveling and having the opportunity to volunteer out of their community at a young age is incredibly rewarding and inspires them to return home with the desire to continue to volunteer. This is the kind of volunteer experience that we love as it serves as an innovative way to get youth volunteering and making big impacts. This type of experience can change the way young people view volunteerism and community engagement.

The article discusses three different tour companies that have programming for “Teen Voluntourism” including WalkingTreeTravel, AfricaSchoolsAssistanceProject and Global Works.
