K4C Recognizes Leader in Service February 2014: Michaella Hoehn-Saric

Michaella Hoehn-Saric, a friend of K4C, the Becker Family and Cara’s, is running the Boston Marathon in April for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in honor of Cara. We are very proud of Michaella’s outstanding effort to raise money for cancer research and participate in the marathon. Eric and Jill have made a donation pledge in memory of Cara and they encourage anyone who wants to help support Michaella to visit her pledge webpage at

Michaella has shared this message with Karma for Cara supporters:

Dear Friends and Family,

Happy New Year! As we enter the new year, we all look for ways to improve personally and to become better people. We also reflect on the happy and sad times that we faced in the past year.

Although I have much to celebrate, 2013 started out on a very sad note for me. My dear friend, Cara Becker, died unexpectedly after a valiant fight with leukemia. I grew up with Cara, our families are very close.

Cara faced many obstacles in her life but was most kind hearted.  She was deeply interested in helping others and from a very young age was active in community service, she always empathized with the underdog.

Even in the midst of her grueling treatment, Cara wrote in her diary optimistically,

“I’m confident in who I am, and plan to start my own foundation to give back and help other leukemia patients. I have big plans for the world, I can’t wait to finally be healthy.”

Cara remained true to her mission in helping others even as she struggled to stay alive. She donated her own bone marrow for research and participated in blood drives throughout her illness.

In memory of my dear friend Cara, I intend to continue to support her mission to help others in their fight with cancer. OnApril 21, 2014, I will run in the Boston Marathon in honor of Cara and with the goal of raising money for cancer research.  I will be running for the Dana-Farber Cancer Research Institute Invitational as a part of the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge (DFMC) Team.

As a DFMC runner, I am out in front of the search to find cures for cancer. I hope you will support me. DFMC directs 100% of the funds it raises to the Claudia Adams Barr Program in Innovative Basic Cancer Research at Dana-Farber, which fosters scientific breakthroughs by advancing the work of gifted researchers in a variety of basic research disciplines. These funds enable scientists at the leading edge of discovery to achieve better cure rates and to enhance patients’ quality of life.

My hope in running 26.2 miles for Cara is to help Cara Becker’s dream of making the world a better place come true. Please join me and follow this link to donate!

Thank you, Thank you! Happy New Year!

Michaella, we wish you the best of luck!
