Karma for Cara Foundation microgrant recipients have competed in an application process alongside other young people who have spearheaded exceptional service projects that benefit their communities. In order to qualify for a K4C award, an applicant must be 18 years of age or younger, and the project must take place in the US.
Through her Little Hands Big Impact project, microgrant awardee Latisha (13, AL) and her 7th grade classmates distributed clothing, non-perishable food, menstrual supplies & a bit of hope to people experiencing homelessness in her community.
In Latisha’s application, she wrote: “I would like to spearhead this project so that the homeless will know that even the youngest of this community see them and we care. I believe this project will encourage kindness, empathy, and gratitude. Mostly, I pray that this project will let our community leaders see that kids are concerned about the number of homeless citizens in our communities. I would like to see the number of homeless people to go down.”
| What inspired you to start this project? | As I was riding through the communities with mom, there was always someone on the side of the road asking for money. My mom would give what she could. Also, when riding downtown, I would see a lot of people sleeping in the doorways of buildings. I always wanted to help when I saw people sleeping alongside the streets. |
| While working on your project, what surprised you? | When we went to the homeless shelter, I was surprised to know that there are a lot of children that are homeless as well. |
| What do you feel you learned from this experience? | I learned that I can have an impact in my community. I also learned that many of my friends feel the same as I do. They were very willing to help. |
| How did Karma for Cara impact your project? | Karma for Cara actually gave me the resources to make a difference. They funded my project, but also made me think of ways to involve the community. It has turned into an ongoing project that I love being a part of. |
| How will your project continue to impact others? | As I stated before, the project is ongoing. We are working with a couple of the homeless shelters with clothes. I want to specifically focus on clothes for children. |
