Q&A With Microgrant Recipient Sean

Karma for Cara Foundation awards microgrants to youth 18 years of age and younger who spearhead exceptional service projects in their communities. Microgrant recipient Sean (16) from Maryland led a high school community service project called EXXY (Empowering Female Youth) to encourage more young women to enter the field of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Mathematics). Sean & fellow high school student leaders from Christian Covenant Academy (CCA), Treasure for Teachers & Students (TFT&S), Girl Up & Young Engineers at Pikesville High School serve younger students from elementary through high school and offer unique opportunities that allow them to apply their skills and learn new things.

  1. What inspired you to start this project? I wanted to be able to inform more people about the different aspects of STEAM, so a friend and I began talking and ended up planning this event.
  2. Other than you, how many student volunteers participated in your service project? 5
  3. Other than you, how many adult (18+) volunteers participated in your service project? 2
  4. How many hours did you spend on your project? 17
  5. How many hours did other volunteers spend on your project? 3
  6. How many individuals were affected by your project? 30
  7. During the time period between when you applied for a K4C microgrant & when you completed the project, what surprised you? I was surprised at the amount of work that goes into planning events like this. I was also surprised at the amount of effort that it took to get participants, and even volunteers– it really opened my eyes to how few people in my community really know or care much about STEAM.
  8. Overall what did you learn from this experience? I learned how to plan events, how to lead a group of people, and how to budget; but most importantly, I learned how important it is to be active in your community, especially when you’re talking about things that matter.
  9. How will your project continue having an impact in the future? We plan to continue to have mini events such as the one we had, except focused on different aspects of STEAM each time. For example, for this particular event, we focused more on the science and engineering aspect. The next event may be focused on technology, arts, or mathematics.
  10. How was the K4C microgrant helpful in the completion of your project? Without this microgrant, I never would have been able to complete this project. As a high school student, I don’t have much pocket money, so I wouldn’t have been able to fund this whole thing myself. I’m so grateful to K4C for allowing me the opportunity to try to do something good to help out and educate members of my community.
