Karma for Cara Microgrants help fund exceptional service projects led by youth 18 and under working to better their communities. Read about our microgrant recipient, Ashley, who created Snack Shak. Snack Shak provides kids in need with backpacks full of food for the weekend during the school year, such as canned soups, vegetables, fruits and pasta.
1. What inspired to start this project?
Snack Shak was inspired by high school students in the Amarillo, TX area who were hungry. We had Snack Shak established in the elementary and middle schools but hunger does not stop after 8th grade. By providing Snack Shak to high school students we are taking one less burden off of their shoulders and allowing them one of many opportunities to succeed.
2. Why is your work important to you?
The work I do with Snack Shak helps me learn about the needs in our community. It is important because I know that we are making a difference in these student’s lives. It feels good to help peers around me have a more normal life.
3. How did the money from the microgrant help with your project?
The money given to us by Karma for Cara was used to purchase food for our Snack Shak students and was also used to purchase a new cart for delivering the bags to the students trusted teachers.
4. What message of giving back do you have for others?
Do what makes you happy while helping. If you have a special talent, try and incorporate it into what you are helping with. Giving back does not have to be hard, nor does it have to cost any money. It will always feel good once you are done and you will always remember how you make a difference in someone’s life. By helping someone in need you are creating a ripple affect which will continue throughout eternity.
