Q&A With Microgrant Recipient Luke

Categories:

Karma for Cara Foundation awards microgrants to youths 18 years of age and younger who spearhead exceptional service projects in their communities. Meet microgrant recipient Luke (6) from Texas who started an Adopt a Grandparent project with his after-school program which serves over 120 at-risk youth. On a weekly basis Luke and 13-15 other kids in the program visited the local retirement home. They worked directly with “grandparents” on different projects.

  1. What inspired you to start this project? Wanting to develop relationships between students and nursing home residents.
  2. Other than you, how many student volunteers participated in your service project?  14
  3. Other than you, how many adult volunteers participated in your service project?  20
  4. How many hours did you spend on your project?  40
  5. How many hours did other volunteers spend on your project? 60
  6. How many individuals were affected by your project?  35
  7. During the time period between when you applied for a K4C microgrant & when you completed the project, what surprised you?  It surprised me that students we thought may not be excited about the project were really positively affected by it. Several students became very close with their adopted grandparents. It also surprised me how similar some of them were. Adopted grandparents and students seemed meant to be, they had so much in common!
  8. Overall what did you learn from this experience? We had to learn to be patient and flexible. Sometimes our adopted grandparent was tired or unable to visit at the scheduled time.
  9. How will your project continue having an impact in the future? Both adopted grandparents and students will have lifelong memories of the activities we completed together. Everyone completed the project feeling so positively about it. We remember our adopted grandparents very fondly.
  10. How was the K4C microgrant helpful in the completion of your project?  We would not have been able to complete the project without the grant! The grant paid for the supplies for the project. Because the grant was awarded, we were able to find matching funds to cover the transportation costs. It all worked out perfectly! Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to see my project become a reality!
