Q&A With Microgrant Recipient Codi

Categories:

Karma for Cara Foundation awards microgrants to youths 18 years of age and younger who spearhead exceptional service projects in their communities.  Meet Codi from Chicago, IL. He & nine other youths aged 14-18 who are involved in the Youth Leadership Institute used their awards to learn fundamental leadership & facilitation skills. This past summer they used those skills to plan, market and execute 4 community tours and service projects within their communities. The purpose of the Youth Leadership Institute and the tours is to combat issues of isolation and negative stigma associated with the south and westside Chicago neighborhoods by encouraging interconnectivity and empathy across communities.

  1. What inspired you to start this project? Empowering young people to help change the narrative of their neighborhoods from a deficit-based to asset-based lens, while engaging a wider city community.
  2. Other than you, how many student volunteers participated in your service project? 15
  3. Other than you, how many adult volunteers participated in your service project?100

  7. During the time period between when you applied for a K4C microgrant & when you completed the project, what surprised you? We received so many positive remarks from attendees. There is a great interest and need for youth-led community tours. Students’ public speaking skills greatly increased as the project progressed.
  8. Overall what did you learn from this experience? Proof that there is a great interest and need for youth-led community tours.
  9. How will your project continue having an impact in the future? This was just the first year and it was a great success. I believe next summer will be even a greater success. This speaks to improving socioeconomics, violence prevention, civic engagement and messaging of neighborhoods.
  10. How was the K4C microgrant helpful in the completion of your project? It wouldn’t have been possible without it. Period. Funding is needed to do this work. For this we, are grateful.
