About the Foundation

About the Foundation

Karma for Cara was founded by 21-year-old Cara Becker and her family while she was being treated for leukemia in 2012.

Cara had been a lifelong volunteer. She participated in service activities ranging from working with Living Classrooms Foundation, an organization that inspires young people to achieve their potential, to simply packing a few extra sandwiches to pass out to the homeless people on her way to school.

Karma for Cara was dreamed up in Cara’s hospital room. What started as a couple of blood drives has grown into a network of programs that educate kids about volunteering, assist children and teens in starting their own community service projects, recognize outstanding leaders in service and support cancer patients and their families.

Although Cara’s time on this earth has ended, her shining character and generous attitude live on through the works of Karma for Cara, which will allow Cara’s legacy to continue to impact the lives of those who need a helping hand. Through this foundation, her spirit will live on forever.

Platform Explanation

Youth Engagement and Volunteerism

Anyone who knew Cara knew of her work in the community. Even during her treatments, she was still thinking of ways to help others. She always had such a soft spot for the underdog. Thus, Karma for Cara will focus a portion of its funds to creating opportunities for youth engagement and volunteerism in communities. This scope ranges from encouraging youth volunteerism to providing them with tools and resources to improve their communities. This platform will seek to make the world the way in which Cara always saw it to be.

Awards and Recognitions

To compliment our desire for increased community involvement, Karma for Cara would like to highlight, honor, and award those that are making big impacts. We want to give back to the people who have given so much. In other words, we want to “serve those who serve others.” This scope will range from awarding youth for their outstanding service in their communities to honoring public service figures, such as nurses, for their above and beyond performance in their respective fields. This is our way of thanking those that have given so much to make an impact benefitting others.

Patient Comfort and Care

Cara quickly discovered how blessed she was to have such a strong support system that was constantly providing means of entertainment, words of encouragement, and company. However, she realized that many other cancer patients were not as lucky. Many were battling alone or without a way to pass the time. Take it from Cara, just sitting in the hospital bed with nothing but cable to make the time go by can drain the necessary positivity needed to fight strong. Thus, Karma for Cara focuses a portion of its funds on supporting the well-being of cancer patients and their families.
