Q&A with Microgrant Recipient Madeline

Categories:

Karma for Cara Microgrants help fund exceptional service projects led by youth 18 and under to better their communities. Read about our microgrant recipient, Madeline who created Buddee Bags. Madeline hand sews wheelchair and walker bags and neck pillows for those with long term hospital stays.

1. How did you become involved with Buddee Bags?

I started Buddee Bags in July of 2014 as a way to help senior citizens who use wheelchairs and walkers to carry items. I quickly realized that a lot of younger people need help, too, so I started making them for children and adults. I hand sew each of the bags from bright, colorful, heavy duty fabric.

I also expanded from bags to make neck pillows for hospital and nursing home patients. I now make neck pillows and heart-shaped comfort pillows for children and adults in the hospital along with wheelchair, walker, and hospital bed bags.

2. Why is your work important to you?

Buddee Bags is very important to me because I can help someone else to make things easier. My grandmother taught me how to sew and I like using that skill to help others. When I visit a hospital or nursing home and I can give someone a bag or a pillow to make things easier for them it makes me feel good.

3. How did the money from the microgrant help with your project?

The microgrant from Karma for Cara was amazing! I was able to make neck pillows, heart-shaped pillows, and hospital bags to donate to Children’s Hospitals and the Ronald McDonald house. The grant helped me to pay for all of the materials, including soft flannel fabric in fun children’s prints and all of the pillow stuffing! This project is ongoing so I will be able to help many, many more kids!

4.What message of giving back do you have for others?

Everyone can make a difference! Don’t think you are too young (I started when I was 10!) or that you’re idea isn’t big enough.  I have given away hundreds of bags and have gotten other people to help too! I am even teaching some of my friends to sew!
